# Numbers at a glance

> The two kinds of phone number you can call from in Fuse, what each one can do, and how Fuse decides which of your numbers a call goes out on.

Every call you place through Fuse goes out from one of your phone numbers, and which one it is changes how the call is received on the other end.

This section covers where your numbers come from, how Fuse chooses between them, and what keeps them in good standing. This page is the map.

## Two kinds of number

You can rent numbers through Fuse, or add a number your business already owns. They are not equivalent.

|                                 | Rented through Fuse                      | A number you already own                      |
| ------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Outbound caller ID | Yes | Yes, once verified |
| Incoming calls | Routed by Fuse | Continue through your existing phone service |
| Registration and reputation | Managed by Fuse | Not fully managed by Fuse |
| Caller name and trusted calling | Set up through Fuse | Stays with the number's current phone service |
| Ownership | Given up permanently when you release it | Stays yours |

Rented numbers are the fuller option, because Fuse manages them end to end and can tie them to your approved business profile. A number you already own is worth adding when your contacts recognize it.

## Which number a call goes out on

For **single dialing** you can pick a specific number yourself, or hand the choice to Fuse.

**Parallel dialing** always hands the choice to Fuse, so call volume is spread across every number you have available.

When Fuse chooses, it looks for continuity first. If the contact has been called before, Fuse reuses the number from the most recent successful attempt, so they see a caller ID they have seen from you already. Only when there is no number to reuse does it fall back to the automatic mode you selected, either **Randomized Area Code** or **Closest Local Area Code**.

<Note>
  A number rated unsatisfactory is left out of automatic selection, and is not reused for continuity either. See [business registration and number health](/dialer/business-registration).
